Situated in the heart of an old trading and harbor city in northern Germany, Bremen University of Applied Sciences trains students, promotes research, and provides expertise for business and industrial partners in a wide range of academic disciplines in the areas of business, engineering and natural and social sciences. With some 8,500 students and nearly 60 different courses on offer, the UAS Bremen is amongst the largest universities of applied sciences in Germany.
The university has also achieved recognition for its research work judging by the numerous regional and national commitments made to it to provide funding, e.g. from the Federal Ministry for Education and Research as well as the Federal Ministry for Economics and Technology.
The University of Applied Sciences Bremen is renowned for the international aspect of its work. Most degree programs have an international component, which allows students spending integrated semester and internships abroad to gain intercultural experience. Almost a thousand students from abroad and visiting staff from 260 partner universities worldwide help to create a global atmosphere and to enhance cultural awareness. German language courses are offered for international students. A number of graduate courses (leading to master degrees) are taught in English. An International Graduate Center houses master programs mainly for business and economic graduates. In addition to their studies, students can participate in the many cultural activities and events sponsored by the university to broaden their interest in literature, music and theater.

The Free Hanseatic City of Bremen was first mentioned by the Romans in 150 CE. During the Middle Ages, Bremen joined the Hanseatic League and since then, Bremen has been an important center of European trade. Together with the city of Bremerhaven, 50 km up the Weser River, Bremen is the smallest of the 16 states of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Bremen is an important transportation center, ideal for those who want to explore Europe. Besides the port, Bremen has an airport that serves 2.5 million passengers a year with 120 flights daily to cities all over Europe. Bremen is also an important manufacturing center. Both Mercedes-Benz and Airbus have major manufacturing facilities in Bremen. Bremen is most noted as a high-tech manufacturing center. The European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS) Astrium facilities in Bremen build satellites and vehicles used by the European Space Agency and private companies. The EADS Astrium Space Tourism Project is also headquartered in Bremen. Bremen is perhaps best known as a brewing center. Both Brauerei Beck GmbH and Co. KG, producers of Beck's Beer and St. Pauli Brauerei, makers of St. Pauli Girl Beer are both located in Bremen
With 1.5 million people in the greater Bremen metropolitan area, the city has a has a lively and cosmopolitan cultural life. The city also enjoys a reputation for tolerance and respect for all kinds of different people.
